Sweet and Spicy DhoDDak

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

Rula'nva dhoDDak, this is what we Konkani Amchis call it!! Logging these tried and tested recipes brings back so many sweet memories for me. I have to thank my dear daughters who urged me to digitally log the recipes. What started out as a family project turned a blog thanks to my nephew and his wife.

Rula'nva dhoDdak is a quick and easy breakfast item that my amma used to make when we had overripe bananas. The sweet bananas bring an added dimension to this very popular breakfast/snack. Of course, it can be made savory without the bananas. This can also be made by making a dough like for chapattis, kneaded together and rolled out into a bhakri and it tastes equally good. I make it both ways, but family prefers it the traditional way that I make it, the method I was used to seeing my Amma and sister in law making it. This recipe is quick, with few ingredients, filling and nutritious too! Enjoy!

Rula'nva dhoDDak

Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 over ripe bananas

• 1/4 cup fresh grated coconut (you can add more)

• 2 finely chopped thai chillies (adjust to your taste)

• 1/2 cup fine sooji/cream of wheat

• 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp wholewheat flour

• salt to taste

• sugar (optional - I don't add it)

• water as needed

• ghee for making them (optional)

Steps:

  1. Mash the bananas well.

  2. Add in the chillies, coconut, salt to taste, sugar (optional) and mix well.

  3. Mix in the fine sooji and wholewheat flour, water as needed, and mix well to make a thick, sticky batter/mix. Add little water and make a dough like chapatti dough if you want to make it like bhakri/paratha. Keep aside for at least 15 minutes to allow for the gluten to release.

  4. Spread it on a hot tawa/griddle and cook it on both sides, adding little ghee (optional) as needed.

  5. Serve it by itself, or with accompaniments like your favorite chutney, or fresh butter (loNi) and pickle. Just Yumm!!
