Phova/Poha/Beaten rice Usli

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

A quick, easy, healthy and tasty breakfast I enjoy is Phova Usli. Few ingredients that are almost always available in my kitchen are used in this delicious preparation. This is Beaten or pounded rice and is also called poha, pohe, or Avlakki. It is available in thick or thin variety. Thick Phova is used in making this usli.

Recipe Ingredients: 2 cups Thick Poha/Beaten Rice 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp urad dhal A Pinch of hing/ asafoetida Few curry leaves 3 - 4 slit green chillies ( can be adjusted to your taste) 1 or 2 broken red chillies ( adjust to your taste) 1/2 - 1 tsp salt ( according to your taste) 1 - 2 tsps Sugar ( adjust to your taste) 1/2 cup grated coconut 2 - 4 tsps Coconut oil or ghee (or cooking medium of your choice)

Steps: 1. Wash the phova and drain and squeeze it well. Next, add the salt and sugar to taste and keep aside.

2. Heat oil in the pan for seasoning and add the mustard seeds and urad dhal. 3. When the mustard seeds splutter, add in the curry leaves, red and green chillies and fry till the urad dhal is golden brown and the chillies are sautéed a bit. 4. Add the hing powder and stir well. 5. Add in the phova, mix well and adjust salt and sugar according to your taste. Stir well till heated and cooked through. 6. Switch off the heat, add the grated coconut and mix well and enjoy while it’s hot.

Notes: Phova Usli is eaten on its own, but it is usually served with some crunchy accompaniments like sev, boondi or chips. +2
